Designers Learning from Mushroom Farmers

In late April, YAU students went to Yuxi to meet with Prof. Chen Shilu of the Yuxi Agricultural, Vocational and Technical College, for a lesson on growing substrate without mold or other problems. They worked with his students to learn the process, discovering things they had been doing incorrectly before.

Mushroom Farmers Learning from Designers

After that lesson, the mushroom farming students from Yuxi Agricultural, Vocational, and Technical College  returned with them to Kunming to Yunnan Arts University to see the myco-materials. They talked about how their knowledge is useful not just for growing mushrooms but also for developing this new material industry in China.  It is very unusual in China to have this kind of interdisciplinary exploration, and it is possible that this exchange may alter the mushroom farmers' futures.
