MYKOS
YAU Environmental Design Team
Overview
Project Summary & Research Focus
YAU Environmental Design is one of the first departments in China to seriously explore the potential of myco-materials for architecture.
Their team has undergraduate and graduate students who have worked together to design the Mykos general plan and architecture.
Our Goals

Conduct field research, study the site, and talk with villagers and mushroom farmers.
01
Learn the techniques to successfully cultivate myco-materials of different species.
02
Design the site's general plan, layout, and buildings, with both exterior and interior finishes, and construct digital and analogue models.
03

Documenting the Journey
Fieldwork Highlights
Our Research Team

Wanyu He
Graduate student majoring in Ethnic Art and Design Studies
Primarily responsible for the interior design of the park, covering wellness spaces, homestay clusters, multifunctional exhibition halls, visitor centers, and research-learning centers. Aimed to create a multifunctional space that combines environmental sustainability, wellness, cultural tourism, and education by integrating the appearance of mycelium bricks into diverse scenarios.

Yaping Wang
Graduate student majoring in Regional Culture and Environmental Design
Responsible for mycelium cultivation and inoculation experiments, and made mycelium products based on its characteristics. Went deep into Tangjiaqing to conduct field research and interview and record local villagers, local strain planting experts, and project company leaders. Made the three-in-one building of research center, visitor center and exhibition hall, residential buildings and village landscape in the design scheme.

Bohan Hu
Graduate Student, researching Regional Culture and Environmental Design
Responsible for shooting interview videos and photos during field research. Carried out mycelium inoculation and cultivation experiments and designs and produces modular mycelium products. Also participated in the preliminary investigation of Tangjiaqing village, formulated design strategies that are in line with local characteristics and the sustainable development design plan.

Fang Yixuan
Graduate Student, Regional Culture and Environmental Design Research
Responsible for creating the architectural models, including material selection, model assembly, and detailed finishing. I ensure that the final model can intuitively showcase its design form and possess a certain degree of aesthetics.

Zihan Zhou
Undergraduate Student, Environmental Design Major
Responsible for the preparation of culture medium and sterile inoculation in the team, including precise weighing raw materials, mixing and disposing, and standardized loading molds
to ensure efficient implementation of the entire process of sterile inoculation.

Jingrui He
Undergraduate Student, Environmental Design Major
Responsible for assisting in raw material preparation and mold filling in the team, including precise weighing raw materials, mixing, and standardizing loading of molds. Also responsible for monitoring the growth process of mycelium to ensure the smooth progress of the project.
